Prop firm with futures — how to get funded

You have a trading system that works, but not enough capital to make a living from it? That is exactly what prop firms are for. This guide explains how the path to a funded account runs and what actually matters along the way.

What a prop firm actually does

A proprietary trading firm — prop firm for short — provides you with trading capital. You trade the firm's money rather than your own and share the profit on a fixed split. At the providers compared here you keep between 80 and 100 percent.

Access runs through an evaluation, often called a challenge or combine. In it you reach a profit target without breaching the loss limits. After that you receive a funded account.

Worth understanding: trading generally takes place in a simulated environment, with the firm mirroring successful traders to the real market where applicable. For you that means there is no deposit protection, which makes choosing a reputable provider decisive.

The process in four steps

  • Choose provider and account size. What matters is the drawdown type and the consistency rule, not the entry price — that is almost identical across the field.
  • Buy and pass the evaluation. Reach the profit target, stay within the loss limits, meet the minimum trading days.
  • Receive the funded account. Setup takes a few days depending on the provider.
  • Request a payout. Mind the waiting periods and minimum trading days before the first payout is possible.

Drawdown: the most important difference

The drawdown type decides whether you pass more often than the profit target does. There are three variants:

  • Trailing (intraday): the loss limit moves in real time with every new account high — including unrealised gains. Demanding, because a returned paper profit shifts the limit permanently.
  • Static: the limit stays fixed from the account start. Easiest to manage.
  • End of day (EOD): the limit is adjusted only once a day after the close. The best compromise for most traders.

A worked example: if you are 1,500 US dollars down in the morning and 2,000 up in the afternoon, an EOD drawdown counts only the end-of-day balance. With a trailing drawdown the morning loss would already have shifted your limit.

The consistency rule and other pitfalls

The consistency rule caps how much of your total profit a single trading day may account for — 30 to 50 percent is common. It is meant to prevent lucky hits and reward steady trading.

Further conditions worth a look before you buy:

  • Minimum trading days before a payout may be requested
  • Rules on holding overnight and over the weekend
  • Restrictions on trading around news events
  • Whether algorithms, copy trading and automated systems are permitted
  • Cost and terms of a reset after a failed challenge

What it costs

Entry prices at the providers tested here range from 57 to 187 US dollars per month. Discount codes often save 20 to 70 percent — across several attempts that makes a substantial difference.

Budget realistically for more than one attempt. The pass rate at most providers is between five and twelve percent. A reset usually costs 30 to 50 percent of the original fee.

Taxes and the legal framework

Payouts from a prop firm are generally not capital gains but income from a service, and are taxed accordingly at your personal rate. Whether you additionally need to register a business depends on your circumstances and country of residence.

This is explicitly not tax or legal advice. Clarify both with your tax adviser before the first payouts arrive.

How to find the right provider

Do not start from the price, start from how you trade. Three questions usually get you there quickly:

  • Do you hold positions through the day and give back paper profits? Then you need end of day or static, not trailing.
  • Do you typically earn on a few strong days? Then avoid programs with a strict consistency rule.
  • How quickly do you need the first payout? Check minimum trading days and waiting periods, not just processing time.

The conditions filter on the home page does the rest — it narrows all 341 account models by exactly these criteria.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need prior experience for a prop firm challenge?

Formally no — anyone can buy one and start. In practice only around five to twelve percent of participants pass. Without a trading system you have tested over several months, the odds are slim.

How much capital do I need to start?

The evaluation fee, so 57 to 187 US dollars per month, plus a reserve for at least one more attempt. You do not need trading capital of your own.

Can I trade at several prop firms at once?

Generally yes, most providers allow it. Do check the copy trading rules if you intend to run the same strategy across several accounts in parallel.

What happens if I fail the challenge?

The account is closed. You can restart it for a reset fee of usually 30 to 50 percent of the original cost, or buy a new evaluation.
